Background of the Study
Social media platforms have transformed the way language is used and perceived, notably influencing syntactic structures and communication norms. In Nigeria, platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have given rise to distinctive hashtag structures that serve both communicative and symbolic purposes. This study examines how social media influences Nigerian syntax by comparing hashtag usage across these two platforms. Hashtags, originally designed to categorize content, have evolved into complex syntactic constructs that encapsulate cultural, political, and social meanings (Nwachukwu, 2023). In Facebook, hashtags tend to be longer and more narrative, while Twitter favors concise and innovative forms that reflect rapid information exchange. The dynamic nature of social media encourages users to experiment with syntax, creating hybrid forms that merge traditional linguistic rules with digital creativity (Eze, 2024). By analyzing a diverse corpus of hashtags, this research aims to uncover patterns of syntactic innovation and explore how these digital artifacts contribute to broader linguistic trends in Nigeria. The study situates itself within the context of digital linguistics and sociolinguistics, offering insights into how technological platforms are reshaping language use. This comparative analysis will further illuminate the relationship between digital communication and evolving syntactic norms, providing a framework for understanding language change in the 21st century (Nwachukwu, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although social media has had a profound impact on language, there is limited research on how hashtag structures influence Nigerian syntax. Existing studies tend to focus on individual platforms or general language trends, neglecting the comparative analysis of hashtag usage between Facebook and Twitter. This research gap obscures our understanding of how digital syntactic innovations emerge and proliferate across different social media environments. Without a clear analysis of hashtag structures, it is difficult to assess their broader impact on everyday language use and communication practices. This study addresses this deficiency by systematically comparing hashtag constructions, aiming to provide insights into the evolving syntax of Nigerian social media discourse (Nwachukwu, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze hashtag structures on Nigerian Facebook and Twitter.

  2. To compare the syntactic innovations observed on both platforms.

  3. To assess the impact of these innovations on overall Nigerian syntax.

Research Questions

  1. What are the predominant hashtag structures on Nigerian Facebook and Twitter?

  2. How do these structures differ between the two platforms?

  3. What implications do these syntactic innovations have for Nigerian language use?

Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the transformative effect of social media on language, specifically focusing on hashtag syntax. The findings will be beneficial for linguists, digital communication experts, and educators, providing a clearer understanding of how technology influences language evolution. The comparative analysis will contribute to discussions on digital linguistics and guide future research and policy development aimed at preserving linguistic diversity while embracing modern communication trends (Eze, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research is limited to a comparative analysis of hashtag structures on Facebook and Twitter and does not include other social media platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of Terms

  2. Hashtag: A word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#) used to index content on social media.

  3. Digital Linguistics: The study of language as it is used in digital environments.
